The Project
At a block wall construction site in Eastern Creek, New South Wales, the project team faced a common challenge in civil construction: how to build a structurally sound retaining wall without the cost of importing large volumes of fill, or needing to undertake extensive excavation works. With advice from Global Synthetics, the solution came in the form of a high-strength uniaxial geogrid.
The Challenge
Construct a stable, long-term block wall using the material already available on site to avoid the high cost and logistical burden of sourcing and importing engineered fill.
Minimise transport and disposal costs associated with removing excess or unsuitable material.
Reduce the deep excavation that would otherwise be required to achieve stable ground conditions in an unreinforced design.
Deliver a solution that was cost-effective and reduced both labour input and construction time.
The Solution
The ACEGrid® PET Geogrid was recommended for the reinforced block wall construction. Its high tensile strength and low creep performance allow the reinforced soil mass to carry tensile loads directly, reducing the wall's reliance on deep block embedment for stability.
This load-carrying capacity meant the site team could reuse the material already on site as reinforced backfill, removing the need to import engineered fill. It also allowed for a reduction in excavation depth, cutting both labour input and construction time without compromising the wall's structural integrity. With ACEGrid®'s proven long-term performance, the design achieved stable ground conditions suitable for a durable, long-term retaining wall solution.

Advantages of ACEGrid®
ACEGrid® is coated with a polymer that provides high resistance to degradation in soil environments, while also protecting the fibres against UV exposure and mechanical damage. This protection was particularly relevant during installation, where geogrids are typically most vulnerable to handling damage. By minimising this risk, the coating gave the project team confidence in the wall's long-term performance without requiring additional handling precautions or extending construction time.
ACEGrid® geogrids are available across a range of tensile strengths up to 900 kN/m, making them a reliable solution for long-term ground support applications. Depending on the variant selected, the ACEGrid® design life can extend more than 120 years.
The Result
The use of ACEGrid® geogrid resulted in measurable savings in material, transport and labour costs relative to a conventional reinforced fill approach.
The Eastern Creek project illustrates how geosynthetic reinforcement can address site-specific constraints through engineered design rather than costly earthworks, resulting in a stable retaining structure delivered on program and within budget.
