The Project

Global Synthetics was contracted by AngloGold Ashanti Australia to address a critical safety issue at the Tropicana Gold Mine in Western Australia. The existing escape tunnel, a vital secondary egress point located beneath a stockpile, presented a serious concern. Constructed only 10 years prior, the metal structure had experienced significant deflection due to poor-quality backfill. This resulted in exceeding the tunnel's maximum load capacity by 15%, placing the tunnel at risk of collapse and forcing its closure.

The Challenge

The compromised escape tunnel left the mine with a single access point, a major safety concern. The existing concrete structure required a solution that could be implemented quickly and efficiently while minimising disruption to ongoing operations. The conveyor belt running through the tunnel further complicated the project, demanding a method that wouldn't require its shutdown.

Our Solution

Our expertise in civil construction solutions led us to recommend the 2 Flanged Tunnel Liner Plate system. These corrugated metal plates are specifically designed for tunnel relining and culvert relining projects.

During July-September 2023, the new multiplate tunnel was successfully installed within the existing escape tunnel using the Flange Tunnel Liner Plates. These plates were specifically designed to achieve a reinforced 2.3m round shape, significantly enhancing the tunnel's structural integrity. This innovative relining system effectively reinforced the structure, restoring its load-bearing capacity and ensuring safe access for mine personnel.
