South Golden Beach, ProTank® Infiltration System
ProTank® units wrapped in geotextile provides low cost solution for storm water runoff.
The Problem
The low-lying South Golden Beach is located just north of Brunswick Heads on the Far North Coast of NSW. The residents have endured many years of localised flooding of driveways and access to properties during rain events. This was caused by the stormwater runoff from Beach St filling the swale drains but was unable to soak into the subsoil quickly enough due to a vegetated and compacted layer of topsoil.
The Solution
ProTank® modular infiltration units located at regular intervals along the stormwater swale drain. Construction method involved excavation of a rectangular area to a depth of approximately 1.2 m ProTank® units were prefabricated beside the excavation and then wrapped in Profab® AS140 geotextile to provide separation and filtration functions. The Profab® AS140 prevents soil from entering the units while high flow rates > 250l/m²/sec easily allows collected stormwater to infiltrate into the sandy subsoil. The modular construction method of ProTank® allows designers to select the most appropriate number of modules to be stacked on top of each other( up 2.1m high) while the area and shape of the tank is only limited by other factors such as how much volume is required , services and property boundaries. For this project infiltration surface area was important so the modules were only single height. 9 units were used at each collection point giving an overall volume of just over 1000 lts but a surface area of over 8 m².
To provide an inlet point and to prevent any rubbish or sediment from entering the ProTank® units, precast stormwater pits were connected by pipework in front of the ProTank units. This system easily allows for regular clearing of sediment and rubbish and provides a concealed air vent outlet for exhausting air from the tank as stormwater is surging into the ProTank® units.
One of the major considerations when council selected the ProTank® system was very strong resident resistance to changing the look of the local streets by installing a more conventional kerb and channel storm water catchment system. The town has an old school feel with the roads and properties meeting in an undefined manner. By selecting this system council has honoured residents wishes while still improving stormwater management for the residents and at a very realistic cost.
From all reports the system if working well and has reduced the amount of water collecting in the street during large rain events.
