With a growing population in the City of Ipswich Qld, some 55 kilometres west of the Brisbane CBD, waste disposal and/or recycling is a high priority for Ipswich City Council.
In early 2024 Ipswich City Council took the step to upgrade an existing area at their Riverview Recycling and Refuse Centre in the Ipswich suburb of Riverview into a dedicated, larger green waste hardstand.
To prolong the life of the new hardstand area, Naue Combigrid® 40/40 Q1 geocomposite geogrid was introduced into the design for the subgrade. Designers from Ipswich City Council along with technical support from the Global Synthetics technical team collaborated together on the design and selected a geosynthetic product that would be best suited to their current application. The design had to cater for not just light household traffic but also heavy vehicular and operational traffic.
The obvious choice was Naue Combigrid® 40/40 Q1 geocomposite geogrid for this particular application, supplied and supported by Global Synthetics, Combigrid® 40/40 Q1 gave the designers a product that would provide reinforcement, filtration and separation all in one product.
The secant stiffness of the Global Synthetics supplied Naue Combigrid® product operating at typically low strain levels of 2% is significantly higher (a factor of 2.5 times higher) than geogrids manufactured in other ways such as multi directional extruded polypropylene geogrids and flexible coated woven polyester geogrids.
Feedback on the use of the Naue Combigrid® product from the local, well respected civil contractor constructing this project was positive and the contractor noted how easy the Naue Combigrid® product was to install over other extruded polypropylene geogrids that the contractor had used in the past.
Naue Combigrid® doesn’t display a “memory” effect like extruded polypropylene geogrids do, where the extruded polypropylene geogrids tend to “roll themselves back up’ whilst being deployed, making positioning the geogrid in place prior to the placement of cover aggregate difficult.
In excess of 20,000m2 of Naue Combigrid® 40/40 Q1 was installed on this particular project. The project was completed in August 2024 and is now in fully operational and receiving green waste 7 days per week.
