The APY (Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara) Lands country lies to the remote far northwest of South Australia, approx 1,400kms from Adelaide. The Federal and South Australian Governments jointly funded (80:20) the upgrade of 210 kilometres of the Main Access Road in the APY Lands. Department for Infrastructure and Transport maintains approximately 1,160 kilometres of unsealed roads and 80 kilometres of sealed road within the APY Lands. Umuwa Chandler road was undertaken as part of the Department’s Main Access Road Upgrade Program, requiring significant surface rehabilitation including a more durable wearing course & moisture seal.
Integral to this remediation process is the use of a GRS (geotextile reinforced seal) which incorporates a nonwoven needle-punched geotextile, specifically manufactured to enable optimal bitumen retention whilst providing maximum bond with the underlying tack coat. ProPave® AS140P was thus chosen to accommodate a dense, stable & uniform layer of sprayed bitumen within the wearing course to function as a moisture barrier, preventing excessive contamination & deterioration of the underlying granular basecourse. These enhancement measures provide a more resilient road surface, capable of attenuating the process of reflective cracking & potholing.

The works contract for this section within APY Lands was awarded to Downer Group who chose to partner with Global Synthetics under stringent terms of quality control, economics, swift communication & logistics. All material supplied by Global Synthetics was accompanied by laboratory quality control certificates & traceable test reports.
Global Synthetics delivered ProPave® paving geotextile to meet the DIT specifications & satisfy the intended function. A variety of roll widths can be supplied to suit any particular road or lane formation.
These infrastructure upgrades improve safety for road users, enhance critical service routes & better connect the outback communities.
