The Project
The City of Ballarat embarked on its first landfill cell capping project using geosynthetic materials, covering more than two hectares of land at the Ballarat Regional Landfill. Fully funded by the City, this large-scale project aims to cap landfill cells in accordance with strict EPA guidelines.
The work, divided into two stages, began in January 2024 and will be completed by June 2025. The capping process involves shaping the landfill cells, applying a geosynthetic clay liner, and then covering it with layers of low-density polyethylene, subsoil, and topsoil. This approach prevents rainwater from seeping in and becoming leachate, while also enabling the capture of methane for energy conversion.
The Challenge
The Ballarat City Council faced a critical challenge in ensuring the integrity and environmental compliance of their landfill capping project. With a large-scale $2.6 million investment in capping cells at the Ballarat Regional Landfill, it was essential to select a supplier that could provide high-quality, reliable materials that met EPA standards and were delivered on time. The primary objective was to create an impermeable barrier that would prevent rainwater ingress, minimise leachate generation, and protect the surrounding environment.
Our Solution
Global Synthetics was selected to supply the necessary geosynthetic materials for this significant project. We provided Bentofix® Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) and Geofirma® Nonwoven Geotextile, two products renowned for their durability, reliability, and compliance with environmental standards.
Bentofix® GCL: A needle-punched, reinforced composite, Bentofix® forms a shear-resistant hydraulic barrier with self-sealing and re-healing characteristics. It provides an engineered alternative to traditional clay liners, offering equivalent protection without the high cost and logistical challenges of clay importation and placement. Geofirma® Nonwoven Geotextile: Manufactured with needle-punching and thermal treatment, Geofirma® offers superior strength and stability. It serves multiple functions, including filtration, drainage, and protection, ensuring the geosynthetic layers remain intact and effective throughout the landfill’s lifecycle.
Project Impact
By utilising Bentofix® and Geofirma®, the Ballarat City Council ensured that the landfill cap would effectively prevent the spread of contaminants, safeguard local water sources, and contribute to the environmental sustainability of the region.
This project, fully funded by the City of Ballarat, exemplifies the importance of selecting the right materials and supplier to meet stringent environmental requirements, ultimately protecting the community and the environment for years to come.
